At the annual GeoPlace conference, which took on place May 9th, Jesse Norman MP, Minister of State for the Department for Transport, introduced a new, free-of-charge service called findmystreet.co.uk
Funded by the Local Government Association (LGA) and built by GeoPlace LLP the joint partnership between the LGA and Ordnance Survey the new findmystreet.co.uk website will help people to understand more about the road network in England and Wales: where a street is, what its official name is in the National Street Gazetteer (NSG), and who is responsible for its maintenance.
The purpose of the website is to support the Deregulation Act (2015), protecting Public Rights of Way (PRoW) from being extinguished. It will also help reduce the burden on local highway authorities creating a list of streets under the Highways Act 1980 Section 36(6).
The findmystreet.co.uk website makes this local authority street management data available to the general public for the first timeâ enabling anyone to view the official status of a street and if it is or is not publicly maintainable.
The National Street Gazetteer (NSG) is the most authoritative source of information about streets in England and Wales. Compiled by the combination of the 174 local highway authority Local Street Gazetteers (LSG), it is created to coordinate works on the street and help minimise the number of times they are dug up by utility companies, statutory undertakers and highway authorities. It holds details of every street in England and Wales.
The Department for Transport uses this same local highways authority street data to underpin its key datasets (such as traffic, congestion, road length, road safety and journey statistics). The data curated by GeoPlace, and its partners, form an important part of the OS MasterMap Highways Network product and is formative in supporting policy decisions at national and local levels.
