South Lakeland District Council has been presented with an Award for 'Most Improved Address Data' in recognition of its information management.
The Award was presented at the GeoPlace annual conference and presentation of the Exemplar Awards 2015 which celebrate excellence in service delivery enabled through local government address and street information.
Using statistics compiled by GeoPlace, this Award recognised the authority which has made and achieved a real commitment to improving both the accuracy and quality of its address data submitted to the national address database run by GeoPlace. This address information is important to a local authority as it is often used for managing benefits, collecting local taxes, arranging school buses, refuse collection routes and registering to vote.
GeoPlace is the centre of excellence for the management of spatial address information and street data for Great Britain, and manages the National Street Gazetteer (NSG) which contains information about streets from every local authority in England and Wales.
The quality of the data from local authorities such as South Lakeland is very important as public sector organisations across Great Britain also use it in the form of the national AddressBase range of products, made available by Ordnance Survey. National projects include, amongst many others: Tell Us Once; rural payments; flood risk; Beyond Census 2011, Registration of land and title ownership; TV license revenue collections; fraud analysis; school admissions; passport applications and the emergency services that rely on it to get to people in distress quickly.
In presenting the Award to Gillian Gribble, Property Gazetteer Officer and Simon Park, Electronic Business Systems Officer for South Lakeland, Neil Silley, Senior National Address Data Manager said "South Lakeland were the very clear winners of this award, they have made significant Improvements in all 8 categories of the Improvement Schedule achieving Gold level for Health checks, update Frequency and Street Synchronicity. However, the statistics alone do not tell the full story of the work the work undertaken which included an extensive review of their street data on a record by record basis. This improvement has also been recognised within the authority through wider use of the data."
